What should you know about simply laser hair removal?

Short answer
Laser hair removal targets pigment in growing hair follicles to reduce regrowth, and safe planning depends on your skin tone, hair colour, treatment area, and device.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the treatment works
The light energy is absorbed mainly by pigment in the hair and converted into heat near the follicle. Because hairs grow in different phases, a course of appointments is commonly needed, with spacing chosen for the body area. Darker, coarser hair often absorbs more energy than very light hair. Alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG lasers have different operating characteristics, so the device should be selected after examining your skin and hair.
Before and after an appointment
Tell the clinician about tanning, medicines, recent skin treatments, a tendency to scar, and any active rash or infection. Avoid plucking or waxing before treatment because the follicle needs to remain present; follow the clinic’s shaving instructions. Protect the area from sun and do not apply irritating products immediately afterward. Temporary redness, warmth, or follicle swelling can occur. Follow aftercare advice and avoid picking at the skin.
When to contact the clinic
Contact the treating clinic if redness becomes increasingly painful, blisters form, the skin changes colour markedly, or swelling persists rather than settling. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread allergic reaction. If hair growth is sudden, coarse, or accompanied by other hormonal changes, ask for medical evaluation; hirsutism may need assessment beyond cosmetic treatment. Recurrent boils or draining lumps also warrant review for hidradenitis suppurativa.
Questions to ask
Ask which laser fits your skin and hair, who will perform the treatment, how to prepare, and what changes should prompt a call. Discuss whether ingrown hairs or razor bumps are part of the problem and how the plan addresses them.

Questions people ask
Does laser hair removal remove every hair?
It is intended to reduce future growth; some hair can remain or return, and response varies by hair and skin characteristics.
Can it help ingrown hairs?
Reducing repeated shaving or waxing may help some people with ingrown hairs, but existing inflammation still needs appropriate care.
