What should you know about simple febrile seizure definition?

Fever-associated means the child has a raised temperature or febrile illness. Generalised means the seizure involves the whole body rather than one isolated limb or side. A simple event ends on its own and the child gradually returns towards their usual state. Sleepiness afterwards can happen. This label describes the seizure pattern; it does not identify the infection causing the fever.

Keep the child away from stairs, furniture edges, and other hazards. Lay them on a safe surface and turn them onto their side when practical. Watch breathing and record the time. Do not restrain the child, put anything in their mouth, or give food, drink, or tablets during the seizure. Once fully awake, follow medical advice about fluids and fever care, and arrange assessment after a first event.

Seek emergency help when the seizure continues, returns, affects one side, follows an injury, or leaves the child breathing abnormally or unusually unresponsive. Fever with a stiff neck, severe drowsiness, or a concerning rash needs urgent assessment for meningitis. A clinician should also consider other explanations, including hypoglycaemia, when the presentation is not typical.
