Signs of ovarian cyst rupture

A cyst can break open and release fluid or blood into the pelvis. Pain may begin on one side and can range from mild to severe. Some people notice bloating, pressure, or pain that spreads into the lower back. A small rupture may settle with observation, while bleeding or severe irritation can require hospital treatment. A ruptured cyst is one possible explanation for pelvic pain; examination is needed to distinguish it from problems such as ovarian twisting, pregnancy outside the uterus, or appendicitis.

Stop strenuous activity and note when the pain began, where it is located, and whether bleeding, vomiting, or faintness develops. Contact a clinician promptly for new or persistent pain. They may assess your abdomen, check for pregnancy when relevant, and arrange a transvaginal ultrasound. Do not start or stop hormonal treatment without advice. If a cyst needs removal, laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy may be discussed after assessment.

Seek emergency care for severe or worsening pain, fainting, marked weakness, heavy vaginal bleeding, repeated vomiting, a swollen or hard abdomen, fever, or trouble breathing. These warning signs can indicate significant bleeding, infection, or another urgent pelvic problem. Arrange same-day medical advice for moderate pain that does not improve, especially if you could be pregnant.
