What are the signs?

You may also notice a racing heartbeat, blurred vision, headache, or difficulty concentrating. Symptoms can come on quickly after a delayed meal, vomiting, extra activity, or diabetes medicine that lowers glucose.

What these symptoms can mean

Hypoglycaemia is a fall in blood glucose that can affect the brain and muscles. Pregnancy does not make every episode of dizziness or nausea low blood sugar: those symptoms have several possible causes, so check glucose when possible and discuss patterns with your care team.

Risk is especially relevant when insulin or certain diabetes tablets are used for Type 1 Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes. Repeated episodes can affect confidence, eating, activity, and medicine decisions, so they deserve review rather than self-adjustment.

What to do during an episode

Stop, sit or lie safely, and check your glucose if you have a meter. If you are alert and can swallow, follow the fast-acting carbohydrate plan provided by your diabetes team, then recheck as directed. Eat a balanced snack or meal afterwards if the next meal is not soon.

Do not take food or drink by mouth if you are confused, having a seizure, or unconscious. A partner should use prescribed rescue treatment if trained, place you on your side, and call emergency services. Never drive while symptoms are present.

When to seek care

Get emergency help for collapse, seizure, severe confusion, inability to swallow, or symptoms that do not improve with the agreed treatment. Tell responders that you are pregnant and whether you use insulin or other glucose-lowering medicine.

Contact your maternity or diabetes team promptly when episodes repeat, occur overnight, follow vomiting, or happen without a clear trigger. Bring readings and details of meals, medicines, activity, and timing so your plan can be adjusted safely.

Questions for your care team

Ask what glucose level and symptoms should trigger action, what treatment to carry, how to manage exercise and vomiting, and whether your medicine schedule needs review. Ask how your partner can recognise a severe episode and when to use prescribed rescue treatment.

Questions people ask

Are dizziness and nausea always low blood sugar in pregnancy?

No. They can have other causes; use glucose readings and your maternity or diabetes team's advice to interpret them.

Should I change my diabetes medicine myself?

No. Repeated episodes need a prompt review so any change protects both your glucose control and pregnancy care.
