Signs of Ectopic Pregnancy

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the uterus, often in a fallopian tube. Pain may be low in the abdomen or pelvis and may be stronger on one side. Bleeding can be light or unlike a usual period. Some people have pain when opening their bowels or urinating, shoulder-tip pain, weakness, or dizziness. Symptoms can begin before a pregnancy test is clearly positive. Pelvic inflammatory disease and previous tubal problems can affect risk, but symptoms cannot confirm the diagnosis. Any pelvic pain in early pregnancy deserves clinical advice.

Contact a pregnancy service or emergency department promptly if you have pain or bleeding with a possible pregnancy. A clinician may use pregnancy hormone testing and a transvaginal ultrasound to locate the pregnancy and assess internal bleeding. Treatment depends on symptoms, scan findings, hormone results, and overall health. Options may include careful monitoring, medicine, or surgery such as salpingectomy. Do not rely on painkillers to decide whether assessment is necessary.

Call emergency services for sudden severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain with weakness, fainting, confusion, marked dizziness, or heavy bleeding. These may indicate internal bleeding and require immediate hospital care. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unstable.

Ask where the pregnancy is located, when repeat hormone testing or ultrasound is needed, and which symptoms mean you should return immediately. If surgery is discussed, ask how it may affect the other tube, recovery, and future pregnancy planning.
