Why symptoms can be subtle

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the womb, often in a fallopian tube. Early symptoms can resemble a normal early pregnancy, period pain, or another pelvic problem. Pelvic pain is a common presentation of ectopic pregnancy, but pain alone cannot identify its cause. A pregnancy test may be positive even when an ultrasound cannot yet show where the pregnancy is located.

If pregnancy is possible and you have pain or bleeding, contact a clinician promptly. Assessment may include pregnancy hormone tests repeated over time and a transvaginal ultrasound. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe. Tell the clinician about the pain’s location, bleeding, prior pelvic inflammatory disease, and any previous ectopic pregnancy.

Get urgent help

Seek emergency care for sudden or severe abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain with weakness, fainting, marked dizziness, or heavy bleeding. These can indicate internal bleeding and require immediate assessment. If an ectopic pregnancy is confirmed, treatment may involve medicine or surgery such as salpingectomy, depending on the findings.
