Siemens Point-of-Care Ultrasound: What Patients Should Know

Short answer
Siemens point-of-care ultrasound refers to portable ultrasound equipment used at the bedside to view selected tissues in real time and guide clinical decisions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- How it works
- A probe sends sound waves through gel and displays returning echoes as a live image.
- Key limitation
- Image quality and interpretation depend on the body area, equipment, and trained operator.
What the examination involves
A clinician places gel on the skin and moves a handheld probe over the area being assessed. Sound waves create live images of structures such as muscles, tendons, fluid collections, and some joint or soft-tissue features. A Siemens device is the equipment brand or system; the usefulness of the examination depends on the operator, probe, body area, and clinical question. Ultrasound does not replace every form of imaging, and it cannot provide a complete view of bones or all deep structures.
The clinician may compare both sides, ask you to move, or use the image to choose a safe path for a procedure. Results should be interpreted alongside your history and examination.
Before and after the scan
Wear clothing that allows access to the area and tell the clinician about tender skin, wounds, allergies to gel ingredients, or a procedure you are considering. The scan itself is generally external and does not expose you to ionising radiation. Ask what the clinician is looking for, whether the images will be stored, and how the result will change the plan. If ultrasound is being used for [PRP Injection](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/prp-injection/), discuss preparation, alternatives, and aftercare separately.
When to seek care
The scan is an assessment tool, not a reason to delay urgent care. Seek prompt medical attention for sudden loss of strength, a rapidly enlarging or very painful swelling, fever with a hot red area, severe injury, or symptoms suggesting impaired circulation. After any procedure, contact the treating team for increasing redness, drainage, fever, or pain that is becoming more severe.
Questions to ask
Ask what structure is being examined, what the scan can and cannot answer, and whether another test is needed. Ask who will perform and interpret it, when you will receive the result, and how it affects treatment choices.

Questions people ask
Does point-of-care ultrasound use radiation?
No. Diagnostic ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation, but it still needs to be used for a clear clinical purpose.
Can it diagnose every injury?
No. It is useful for selected superficial and soft-tissue questions, while other problems may require different imaging or tests.
