What should you know about side foot tendonitis?

Short answer
Side foot tendonitis causes pain along the outer foot that often worsens with walking, running, or repeated loading.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical location
- Along the outer border of the foot or near the ankle.
- Often aggravated by
- Running, hills, push-off, and repeated side-to-side loading.
- Assessment focus
- Tenderness, strength, gait, range of motion, and injury history.
What it can mean
Tendons connect muscle to bone and help control the foot. Repeated training, a sudden increase in activity, uneven surfaces, or footwear that changes how you load the foot can irritate these tissues. Pain may be tender to touch and may increase when you turn the foot, stand on tiptoe, or push off. Swelling or a crackling feeling can occur, but their absence does not rule it out.
Outer-foot pain can also follow an ankle injury or a small bone injury, so the location and the event that started it matter. Muscle soreness after exercise usually settles as the muscle recovers; tendon pain that keeps returning with the same movement deserves assessment.
What to do now
Reduce running, jumping, hills, and other movements that reproduce the pain for a short period, while keeping comfortable daily movement. Ice wrapped in cloth may help after activity, and supportive shoes can reduce strain. Do not force a stretch or continue an exercise that makes symptoms sharper.
A clinician can examine your gait, ankle strength, and tenderness and decide whether imaging is needed. Physiotherapy may use graded mobility, balance work, and progressive tendon loading. Strength training rehabilitation can help restore capacity before a return to sport; shockwave therapy or PRP injection may be discussed in selected persistent cases.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment if pain began with a snap, the foot is visibly deformed, you cannot bear weight, or bruising and swelling are substantial. Seek urgent care for a cold, pale, blue, numb, or rapidly worsening foot. If symptoms are not improving with reduced loading or keep interrupting normal walking, book an evaluation rather than repeatedly testing the painful tendon.
Questions for your doctor
Which tendon or nearby structure is tender? Could an ankle or foot bone injury explain the pain? What activity level is safe, and how should exercises progress? Would imaging or a rehabilitation referral change the plan?

Questions people ask
Can I keep exercising with side foot tendonitis?
Choose only activities that do not increase pain during the session or leave it worse afterward; pause impact exercise until loading is comfortable.
Does outer-foot pain always come from a tendon?
No. A clinician may also consider a sprain, bone injury, joint problem, or nerve irritation based on the examination.
