Side effects of gout

Gout is an inflammatory form of arthritis caused by urate crystals collecting in and around a joint. A flare can make even light touch uncomfortable and may affect the big toe, ankle, knee or another joint. Repeated flares can leave ongoing stiffness, limit walking and gradually damage joint surfaces. Gout may also occur alongside conditions such as chronic kidney disease or obesity, so a full health review helps guide care. Symptoms can settle and return, which does not mean the underlying risk has disappeared.

During a flare, rest the joint, keep it elevated when possible and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Arrange medical advice because early treatment can reduce inflammation and protect movement. Do not change prescribed urate-lowering medicine without guidance. Keep a record of triggers, affected joints and medicines, and discuss hydration, weight management and kidney health with your clinician.

Seek urgent help if a hot, swollen joint is accompanied by fever, chills, confusion or rapidly worsening illness, because infection can resemble gout. Get prompt advice for a first attack, severe pain, inability to bear weight, or symptoms that are not improving with the agreed plan.
