What should you know about sickness with chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a contagious viral illness. Feeling unwell may begin around the time spots appear, and the rash can develop in waves from itchy red marks into fluid-filled blisters and then crusts. New and crusting lesions can appear together. Scratching can break the skin and allow bacterial infection. Shingles is a different later manifestation of the same virus, usually causing a painful band of blisters rather than the widespread childhood rash.

Stay home and avoid close contact with people who are pregnant, immunocompromised or very young until a clinician confirms it is safe to return. Keep nails short, use cool baths and wear loose clothing. Do not scratch blisters. A GP can confirm the diagnosis and advise on fever relief; antiviral treatment may be considered for some people when started early. An oral antihistamine may help itch when recommended by a clinician or pharmacist.

Get urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe headache, repeated vomiting, dehydration, a rapidly spreading red or painful area around blisters, or eye involvement. Contact a clinician promptly if the illness affects an adult, pregnancy, a newborn or someone with reduced immunity.

Ask how to confirm chickenpox, which fever and itch medicines are suitable, whether antiviral treatment is indicated, and when vaccination can be discussed for household contacts.
