Shortness of Breath During Pregnancy

Short answer
Shortness of breath can occur during pregnancy as the body and growing uterus change, but sudden or severe breathlessness needs prompt medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Can be normal
- Gradual breathlessness with activity may accompany pregnancy changes and improve with rest.
- Get urgent help
- Sudden, severe, or breathlessness with chest pain, fainting, or blue lips needs emergency care.
- Medication
- Check pregnancy medicines and inhalers with your clinician before making changes.
What breathlessness can mean
Pregnancy increases the body's demand for oxygen and can alter how deeply and quickly you breathe. Later in pregnancy, the uterus can also limit how freely the diaphragm moves, so climbing stairs or lying flat may feel harder. Mild breathlessness that develops gradually and settles with rest may be part of these changes.
Breathlessness can also occur with anaemia, asthma, a chest infection such as acute bronchitis, or an allergic reaction. A clinician may ask when it began, whether it occurs at rest, and whether you have cough, wheeze, fever, palpitations, or swelling. Your symptoms do not identify their cause on their own.
What you can do now
Stop and rest when you become breathless. Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and take slow, comfortable breaths. Move at a gentler pace, avoid smoke and other known triggers, and keep scheduled pregnancy appointments so blood pressure, blood count, and other concerns can be checked.
Use a prescribed asthma inhaler exactly as directed; do not start, stop, or change medicines or supplements without advice from your maternity clinician. If the symptom is new, worsening, or interfering with ordinary activity, contact your obstetric or primary-care team for an assessment.
When to seek care
Call emergency services now for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, difficulty speaking, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. Treat sudden breathlessness with chest pain, coughing blood, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or one-sided leg pain or swelling as an emergency.
Seek same-day medical advice for breathlessness at rest, a new wheeze, fever, persistent cough, marked tiredness, or symptoms that are becoming more frequent. These features can occur with problems such as asthma, anaemia, infection, or heart and lung conditions and should not be judged by pregnancy alone.
Questions for your doctor or midwife
Ask: Could my blood count or asthma be contributing? Which symptoms mean I should attend the maternity unit or emergency department? Is my current inhaler or other medicine suitable in pregnancy? Keep a note of triggers, timing, associated symptoms, and how quickly you recover, as this can help guide the assessment.
