Shaving pimples in the pubic area: what to know

Pubic hair is often coarse and can curl back after a close shave. A trapped hair may cause a firm or itchy bump, while an inflamed follicle may look like a small red or pus-tipped spot. Tight clothing, sweat, rubbing, and fragranced products can keep the area irritated. Acne can occur in the groin but is not the only explanation for shaving-related spots. Bumps on genital skin, sores, blisters, or discharge may have causes unrelated to shaving and should not be self-diagnosed from appearance.

Stop shaving the affected skin until it has recovered. Rinse gently, pat dry, and choose loose, breathable underwear to reduce rubbing. A cool compress may ease stinging or swelling. Do not squeeze, lance, scrub, or use strong acids, alcohol, or fragranced products on the area. When shaving again, use a clean sharp razor, plenty of suitable shave gel, light strokes in the direction of growth, and as few passes as possible. Avoid applying products to internal genital surfaces. Recurrent bumps may need assessment for Folliculitis, Razor Bumps, or another condition.

Seek medical advice for worsening pain, spreading redness, a deep lump, repeated pus, open sores, blisters, unusual discharge, or bumps that keep returning. Get prompt help if fever, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe tenderness develops.

Ask whether the lesions are in hair-bearing skin, whether they resemble Folliculitis or Razor Bumps, and which products are safe for the exact area involved.
