Sharp pain in stomach during sex

People often use stomach to describe the whole abdomen, so the exact location matters. Pain low in the abdomen can involve the uterus, ovaries, bowel, bladder, or pelvic muscles; pain higher up may involve the abdominal wall or digestive organs. Endometriosis and ovarian endometrioma can present with deep pain during sex. Pelvic inflammatory disease may cause pelvic pain alongside discharge or fever. Dryness and vulvar irritation, including Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause or Vulvodynia, can also make penetration painful.

Pause when the sharp sensation appears and avoid deep or rapid penetration until you know what triggers it. Consider a different position, slower movement, and lubricant. Keep a brief symptom record: upper or lower location, one-sided or central pain, cycle timing, bowel or urinary changes, bleeding, and whether the pain continues afterward. Book a clinical assessment for repeated, severe, or unexplained episodes.
