Sharp ovulation pain on the right side: what to know

Ovulation can cause a short-lived prick, cramp or pulling feeling low on the side where an egg is released. The right ovary may be involved in one cycle and the left in another, so right-sided pain alone does not establish a diagnosis. A small amount of irritation from fluid released during ovulation may add to the discomfort.

A different pattern deserves attention. Endometriosis may cause pelvic pain linked with periods or sex, and an ovarian cyst may cause pressure or sudden pain. Appendicitis and other abdominal conditions can also cause right-sided pain, particularly when symptoms progress or spread.

Record the first and last moments of pain, its intensity, your cycle day and any nausea, discharge, bleeding or urinary symptoms. Try a warm bath or heat pack and reduce strenuous activity while you observe the pattern. Take only pain relief that you can safely use, following the product instructions.

Contact a healthcare professional if the pain does not settle, returns repeatedly, starts at unrelated times or limits movement. They can consider the whole symptom pattern rather than relying on the side alone.

Get urgent care for intense or rapidly worsening pain, fever, persistent vomiting, faintness, heavy bleeding, a firm swollen abdomen or pain that makes walking difficult. If pregnancy is possible, one-sided pain with bleeding, dizziness or shoulder-tip pain needs prompt evaluation.

Ask whether the timing fits ovulation, whether an examination or scan is needed, how to distinguish pelvic from bowel or appendix symptoms, and which warning signs should send you to urgent care.
