Shampoos for flaky scalp: what to know

Flakes may result from simple dryness, excess oil, irritation or an underlying scalp condition. Fine, loose flakes can occur with dandruff, while thicker plaques, marked redness, broken hairs or tender areas need a closer assessment. A flaky scalp can be a presentation of Dandruff, Scalp Psoriasis, Scalp Ringworm or Seborrheic Dermatitis; the appearance alone cannot identify which one is present.

Choose a gentle cleanser for mild dryness. If flakes recur or sit on an oily, itchy scalp, a clinician or pharmacist may suggest a medicated formula. Massage it onto the scalp rather than only the hair, follow the label contact time, and rinse thoroughly. Avoid scraping scale with nails and pause products that sting, burn or trigger a rash. Keep styling products off irritated skin and wash tools that touch the scalp.

Arrange a dermatology assessment for spreading scale, hair loss, pus, bleeding, significant pain, swollen areas or a child with suspected infection. Prompt review matters when there are smooth patches with broken hairs or close contacts with similar symptoms, because a shampoo chosen for dandruff will not address every cause.
