Severe headache in the third trimester

Head pain can follow dehydration, heat exposure, poor sleep, muscle tension, a viral illness, or sinus inflammation. Pregnancy-related high blood pressure disorders also need consideration, particularly when the pain is new, strong, persistent, or unlike earlier headaches. A headache alone cannot identify the cause. A clinician may check your blood pressure, urine, neurological symptoms, vision, and pregnancy wellbeing.

Stop strenuous activity and rest in a quiet, cool place. Sip fluids if you can keep them down, and note when the headache began, where it hurts, what it feels like, and whether anything triggers it. Do not start, stop, or combine medicines without checking with your maternity team; some pain medicines are unsuitable late in pregnancy. Contact your obstetric service or maternity assessment unit today for advice.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, fainting, confusion, weakness, trouble speaking, seizure, fever with a stiff neck, chest pain, breathing difficulty, or loss of vision. Contact maternity care urgently for a headache with flashing lights, marked swelling, pain beneath the ribs, vomiting, or reduced fetal movement. Do not drive yourself if you feel unwell.
