Severe headache after miscarriage: what to know

Headache can follow pain, poor sleep, dehydration, emotional strain, blood loss, or changes in pregnancy hormones. It may also signal high blood pressure, infection, anaemia, a medication effect, or a neurological emergency. The timing of the miscarriage and how it was managed matter. Contact your early pregnancy or emergency service today for a severe, new, persistent, or unusual headache. Do not drive if vision or alertness is affected. Sip fluids if you can, note medicines taken and the time symptoms began, and avoid taking additional medicines until a clinician confirms what is suitable for you. Call emergency services for a sudden worst-ever headache, fainting, seizure, confusion, neck stiffness, weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, severe visual change, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Seek urgent review for fever, worsening pelvic pain, foul-smelling discharge, soaking bleeding, or dizziness after the miscarriage.

Ask whether your blood pressure, blood count, infection markers, and pregnancy-loss assessment are reassuring. Ask whether an ultrasound is needed, which pain relief is appropriate, how to monitor bleeding and fever, and what follow-up is required after treatment.
