Short answer

Severe constipation after delivery can result from slowed bowel movement, reduced fluids, pain, medicines, or fear of straining and deserves tailored advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why bowel movements may change

After birth, the bowel may be affected by reduced activity, dehydration, changes in eating, iron supplements, and strong pain medicines. Soreness from stitches or haemorrhoids can make someone delay going, which allows stool to become harder. Constipation is a symptom, not a diagnosis; ongoing symptoms may also occur with conditions such as hypothyroidism or irritable bowel syndrome.

Tell a clinician whether you are passing wind, when you last opened your bowels, and whether you have pain, vomiting, fever, bleeding, or a swollen abdomen. Mention whether you are breastfeeding and list all medicines, including iron and opioid pain relief.

Gentle measures that may help

Unless your maternity team has restricted fluids, drink regularly and include fibre gradually through fruit, vegetables, pulses, and whole grains. Gentle walking can stimulate the bowel. Use a relaxed toilet position with your feet supported, and avoid forceful straining; protecting a healing pelvic area matters.

Ask your midwife, GP, or pharmacist about a stool-softening or laxative medicine suitable after delivery and during breastfeeding. Do not borrow someone else's treatment or use repeated stimulant products without advice. Nutrition counselling may help if eating and drinking have become difficult.

When to seek urgent help

Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, a markedly swollen abdomen, faintness, fever, heavy bleeding, or inability to pass stool and wind. These features can indicate a problem that needs examination rather than home treatment.

Contact your maternity or primary-care team promptly if constipation is severe, lasts despite the plan, or is accompanied by rectal bleeding or signs of dehydration such as very dark urine, dizziness, or unusual sleepiness.

Useful questions for your clinician

Ask which laxative or stool softener fits your recovery and feeding plans, how long to use it, and whether iron or pain medicine can be changed. Ask how to care for stitches or haemorrhoids while opening your bowels and what warning signs should prompt same-day review.

Questions people ask

Can constipation harm stitches?

Straining can increase discomfort, so ask your maternity team about stool-softening treatment and a comfortable toilet position.

Should I use a laxative while breastfeeding?

Some options may be suitable, but the choice depends on your health and medicines. Check with a pharmacist, midwife, or doctor first.
