How is infection treated in sepsis?

Short answer
Sepsis infection treatment combines urgent hospital support with medicine and procedures aimed at controlling the infection source.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What treatment may involve
Clinicians take samples when possible and start treatment for likely infection without waiting for every result. Antibiotics are used when bacteria are suspected; antiviral or antifungal treatment may be appropriate in selected situations. Treatment is adjusted when test results and the clinical picture become clearer. Fluids, oxygen and medicines to support circulation may be needed, alongside close monitoring of breathing, alertness, urine output and kidney function. Source control can mean draining an abscess, removing infected tissue, treating an infected wound or addressing an infected device.
What you can do
Sepsis needs urgent medical care, usually in hospital. Tell the team about allergies, current medicines, recent antibiotics, pregnancy, immune problems, operations and possible infection sites. Take antibiotics only as prescribed and never share leftover medicine. If treatment is given at home for a less severe infection, follow the review plan and report deterioration promptly.
When to seek emergency help
Call emergency services for confusion, collapse, severe breathlessness, blue or mottled skin, fainting, rapidly worsening weakness, or very little urine. A Fever, Chills or Feeling Generally Unwell with a suspected infection can warrant urgent assessment, especially when the person is deteriorating or has serious underlying illness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what infection is being treated, whether a source-control procedure is needed, how kidney function affects medicine choices, when treatment will be reviewed, and what warning signs should trigger immediate help.

Questions people ask
Are antibiotics always used for sepsis?
Antibiotics are used when a bacterial infection is suspected, while other treatments may be chosen for viral or fungal causes.
Why might a procedure be needed?
Medicine may not clear a collection, infected tissue or device, so source control can be necessary.
