What should you know about sepsis from an ingrown hair?

An ingrown hair curves back into the skin and may cause a tender bump, irritation, or pus. Scratching, squeezing, or shaving over it can damage the skin further and allow germs to enter. Increasing warmth, swelling, pain, pus, or redness spreading beyond the bump may indicate cellulitis. Sepsis is a severe whole-body response to infection and may cause fever, chills, confusion, or marked weakness. A bump alone does not show that sepsis is present.

Keep the area clean, avoid picking or digging for the hair, and pause shaving or waxing until the skin settles. A warm, clean compress may ease discomfort. Seek medical advice if the area becomes larger, more painful, hot, drains pus, or fails to improve. Tell the clinician about diabetes, immune conditions, recent medicines, and any previous skin infections.

Get emergency help for confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, inability to stay awake, cold clammy skin, very little urine, or rapid worsening. Fever or chills with spreading redness, severe weakness, or a fast decline needs urgent assessment. Do not wait for the ingrown hair to open or drain if the person is becoming generally unwell.

Ask whether the bump is infected, whether it needs drainage or prescribed medicine, and how to prevent further irritation. Ask where the redness should stop and which general symptoms mean you should seek emergency help.
