What should you know about seizure because of fever?

A fever may accompany a brief seizure in a young child, often during an infection. The seizure may involve stiffening, rhythmic jerking, unresponsiveness, or changes in breathing. Fever-related seizure does not by itself identify the infection, and a clinician may need to look for the source.

Meningitis is an uncommon but serious cause of fever and neurological symptoms. A seizure during fever can also have another explanation, including low blood sugar or a known seizure disorder. The direction matters: fever may be present with a seizure, but a seizure does not prove that fever caused it.

Place the child or adult on a safe surface, turn them gently onto their side when possible, cushion the head, remove nearby hard objects, and note when the seizure starts. Do not hold the person down, put food or medicine in the mouth, or try to cool them with ice water during the seizure.

After movement stops, check breathing and stay nearby. Follow the person’s written seizure plan if one exists. Arrange medical advice after a first fever-associated seizure, even if recovery seems quick, so the fever and the event can be assessed together.

Call emergency services if the seizure continues beyond the emergency limit given by your clinician, happens again before full recovery, affects breathing, causes injury, occurs in a baby, or is followed by persistent sleepiness or weakness. Fever with a stiff neck, severe headache, a new rash, marked light sensitivity, or difficulty waking requires immediate help.
