What should you know about segmental liver resection?

The surgeon removes a planned segment or group of segments containing the tumour, together with a margin of nearby liver tissue. The liver has a strong ability to recover after part is removed, but suitability depends on the amount and condition of the remaining liver, the tumour’s position and the person’s general health.

The operation may be considered for a primary liver tumour or cancer that has spread to the liver, including selected bowel cancers. Imaging and blood tests help map the lesions and assess liver function. Tumour ablation is a different local treatment that destroys tumour tissue without removing the same piece of liver.

Before surgery, tell the team about medicines, bleeding problems, alcohol use, previous liver disease and any recent infection. You may have tests to check liver function, blood clotting and fitness for anaesthesia. Follow instructions about fasting and medicines exactly as provided.

Afterwards, pain control, breathing exercises and early movement help recovery. The team watches the wound, liver function, fluid balance and bowel activity. Appetite and energy can take time to return. Arrange help at home and ask when driving, lifting and work can safely resume for your procedure.

After surgery, contact the hospital urgently for increasing abdominal pain, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, persistent vomiting, confusion, fainting, heavy wound bleeding or a swollen abdomen. These symptoms can have several causes and need prompt clinical assessment rather than home observation.
