What should you know about secondary lung cancer?

A secondary tumour in the lung is different from cancer that started in lung tissue. The cells usually retain features of the original cancer, so pathology and scans help the team decide where it began and how widely it has spread. A cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, fatigue or coughing blood can occur, but these symptoms also have non-cancer causes.

Doctors may examine tissue, compare it with the original tumour and use imaging to check the chest and other organs. Genomic tumour profiling can sometimes identify changes that help match treatment to the tumour’s biology. The plan is based on the primary cancer, the number and position of lung deposits, symptoms and your overall health.

Ask which cancer originally spread and what the scans show. Treatment may use medicines that travel through the bloodstream, such as chemotherapy or another systemic option. Radiotherapy can target a painful or troublesome area. Surgery such as lung lobectomy is considered only for selected situations when removing a defined area is useful and safe. Palliative care can begin alongside cancer treatment to support breathing, pain, energy, sleep and coping.

Keep a record of breathlessness, cough, sputum, chest pain and activity tolerance. Take medicines exactly as prescribed and report new side effects early; adjustments can make symptom control more manageable.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, sudden chest pain, coughing a large amount of blood, fainting or new confusion. Contact your oncology team promptly for fever, worsening cough, increasing chest pain or breathlessness that is new or not settling.

Where did the cancer start, and how certain is that result? What do the scans show in the lungs and elsewhere? Would genomic profiling change treatment? Is the aim to control disease, relieve symptoms, or both? Could chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery or palliative care help me now?
