Seborrheic dermatitis and waxy hair

This change usually starts at the scalp rather than along the hair shaft. The condition can cause greasy or dry scale, redness and irritation in areas rich in oil glands. Flakes may cling to hair, while scratching can move scale through the roots. A waxy texture can also be amplified by styling products, infrequent washing or a shampoo that does not remove buildup. It does not by itself identify the cause; dandruff and other scalp conditions can look similar.

Wash the scalp regularly with a gentle cleanser and focus the lather on the skin, not only the hair lengths. A clinician may suggest a medicated shampoo or a topical antifungal treatment, depending on the appearance and severity. Follow the product directions, allow treatment to contact the scalp for the recommended time, and rinse well. Avoid forcefully lifting attached scale or adding heavy oils to an irritated scalp. Keep a note of products that worsen greasiness or itching.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the scalp is painful, oozing, crusted, bleeding or developing areas of hair loss. Seek prompt advice when symptoms spread beyond the scalp, disturb sleep, or continue despite careful treatment. A changing rash may need a different diagnosis and treatment.
