Seborrheic dermatitis: dry skin under a beard and mustache

Seborrheic dermatitis favours oil-rich skin, including the cheeks, chin, upper lip, and skin around the nose. Facial hair can trap skin flakes, sweat, oil, and product residue, making scale harder to see and cleanse. It may also make the skin feel tight while the hair looks oily. Itching can lead to scratching, which may create small breaks in the skin. Flaking under facial hair can have other causes, such as irritation from grooming products or a different inflammatory rash, so a persistent problem deserves an examination.

Clean the hair and the skin underneath with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, and rinse thoroughly. Pat dry rather than rubbing. Avoid picking scale and pause newly introduced oils, balms, dyes, or fragranced products if they seem to trigger burning or redness. A clinician may suggest topical antifungal treatment or another facial medicine, with directions for applying it to the skin rather than only coating the hair. A medicated shampoo may sometimes be used on beard-area skin, but the product and contact time should be confirmed for the face.

Book an assessment when flaking continues, recurs frequently, or interferes with grooming or sleep. Get prompt medical help for pus, spreading redness, painful cracks, marked swelling, fever, or involvement of the lips or eyes. A clinician can check whether the follicles are inflamed, whether a product is causing dermatitis, and which treatment is suitable for facial skin.
