Can seborrheic dermatitis cause hair loss?

Short answer
Seborrheic dermatitis can contribute to temporary shedding or breakage through scalp irritation and scratching, but persistent hair loss needs a separate assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How inflammation may affect hair
Seborrheic dermatitis inflames the scalp and can create itch, scale, or tenderness. Scratching may pull out fragile hairs or break them near the surface. When the skin settles, this type of shedding or breakage may improve, although the timing varies.
Hair loss can also result from patterned follicle changes, patchy autoimmune disease, infection, medication effects, or a recent physical stressor. Oily skin, scalp flaking, or a scaly patch helps describe the skin problem but does not identify the cause of hair loss by itself.
Steps that protect the scalp
Use a gentle washing routine and follow directions for a medicated shampoo if one is recommended. Do not pick scale, scratch with fingernails, or use strong dyes and fragranced products on an irritated scalp. A topical antifungal treatment may be appropriate when a clinician confirms the relevant diagnosis.
Note whether hairs are shedding from all over, breaking, or thinning in a defined pattern. Photographs and a list of new medicines or illnesses can help a clinician assess the change. See Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis for related scalp information.
When hair loss needs review
Arrange medical review for sudden or rapidly increasing loss, smooth patches, scalp pain, pus, heavy crusting, or broken hairs. Seek prompt care if a rash spreads quickly or facial swelling affects breathing. Persistent thinning after scalp symptoms improve may indicate another hair condition and deserves examination.
What to ask
Ask whether your scalp findings fit Seborrheic Dermatitis, whether the hair change is shedding, breakage, or Hair Loss, and whether Oily Skin, Itchy Scalp, Scalp Flaking, or Scaly Skin is contributing. Discuss the treatment plan and signs that should trigger reassessment.

Questions people ask
Will treating seborrheic dermatitis always restore lost hair?
Not necessarily. Hair breakage or temporary shedding may improve, while another hair-loss condition may need separate treatment.
What hair-loss pattern is more concerning?
Sudden loss, smooth patches, rapid progression, pain, pus, or heavy crusting should be assessed rather than managed with shampoo alone.
