Sebaceous Cyst in the Belly Button: What to Know

Sebaceous cyst is a common name for an epidermoid cyst. In the navel, sweat, lint, friction, and moisture can make a small lump harder to see and may irritate its surface. It may feel like a bead under the skin, show a small dark opening, or release thick material with an unpleasant smell. The belly button is also close to the abdominal wall, so a bulge that changes with coughing or straining may have a different cause and should not be assumed to be a skin cyst.

Wash gently with mild soap and water, then dry the fold carefully. Avoid digging into the navel, squeezing the lump, or applying harsh antiseptics.
