Short answer

Screen fatigue usually reflects prolonged visual and mental effort, poor breaks, glare, dry eyes, or posture strain, but ongoing fatigue deserves a broader health assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common symptoms
Eye discomfort, headache, blur, neck tension, and reduced focus
First changes
Distance breaks, less glare, larger text, and better posture
Review needed
Persistent symptoms or fatigue away from screens

What screen fatigue can involve

Long periods of close focusing can leave the eyes sore, dry, gritty, watery, or temporarily blurred. Brightness, glare, small text, and reduced blinking may worsen discomfort. Concentrating on messages, documents, or fast-moving content can also produce headaches, neck tension, irritability, and difficulty focusing. Poor sleep after late device use may add to next-day tiredness. These symptoms do not by themselves identify one illness.

If tiredness continues away from screens, affects daily activities, or comes with breathlessness, paleness, thirst, fever, weight change, low mood, or sleep problems, other explanations should be considered. Anaemia, dehydration, burnout, infection, and other health conditions can all require different care.

Ways to reduce symptoms

Take frequent distance breaks and deliberately blink while reading. Adjust screen brightness and text size to a comfortable level, reduce glare, and position the display so your neck stays relaxed. Keep the screen at a sensible reading distance, vary tasks, and avoid holding a phone in one fixed posture for long periods. Drink fluids, protect sleep time, and consider an eye examination if blur, pain, or headaches continue. Preservative-free lubricating drops may help some people, but ask a pharmacist if you have eye disease or use other drops.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, a new curtain-like shadow, marked weakness, confusion, or a severe headache with neurological symptoms. Arrange a routine review if symptoms persist despite screen changes, one eye is consistently affected, or fatigue is present throughout the day. A clinician can check vision, sleep, medicines, mood, hydration, and possible medical causes.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms be caused by vision correction, dry eyes, sleep disruption, or another condition? Should I have an eye examination or blood tests? Which screen and lighting changes are most suitable for my work? What warning signs should prompt urgent care?

Questions people ask

Can screen use make eyes feel dry?

Yes. Concentrating on a screen can reduce blinking, allowing the eye surface to dry and feel gritty or irritated.

Is all-day tiredness caused by screen fatigue?

Not necessarily. If tiredness continues away from screens, a clinician should consider sleep, mood, hydration, medicines, and medical causes.
