What should you know about scaly dandruff?

Dandruff commonly appears as loose white or yellowish flakes on the scalp or hair. It can be itchy without causing a visible rash elsewhere. Seborrheic dermatitis is a related inflammatory condition that may cause thicker scale and redness around the scalp margins, eyebrows, ears, or sides of the nose. Flaking can also follow irritation from hair products, and other scalp conditions can resemble dandruff.

The amount of flaking can change with weather, washing habits, stress, or product use. Scalp scratching may break the skin and make soreness or crusting more likely, so the surface and symptoms matter when choosing treatment.

Wash regularly with a gentle shampoo and massage the scalp with fingertips rather than nails. A medicated shampoo treatment may be useful when ordinary washing does not control the flakes; follow its label or clinician instructions and allow the product appropriate contact with the scalp. Avoid heavy fragranced products if they worsen irritation. Do not share brushes, combs, hats, or towels while a contagious scalp problem is being considered. A topical antifungal treatment may be advised for a specific diagnosis.
