Why Is My Scalp Always Flaky?

Small white or yellow flakes with an oily or itchy scalp can occur with dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis. Thick, sharply defined scale may fit scalp psoriasis, which can extend beyond the hairline. Scalp ringworm may cause scale with broken hairs, tender patches or swollen glands and needs targeted treatment. Irritation from hair products can also cause flaking, especially after a new dye, oil or styling product.

Wash regularly with a gentle shampoo and avoid scratching or forcefully lifting scale. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend a medicated shampoo suited to the suspected cause; use it as directed and allow it to remain on the scalp for the advised contact time. Rinse thoroughly, avoid products that sting, and do not share combs, brushes, hats or towels while infection is being considered.

Arrange assessment if flakes persist despite appropriate shampoo use, spread beyond the hairline, or occur with hair loss, broken hairs, pain or marked redness. Seek prompt care for pus, fever, swollen glands, rapidly worsening tenderness, or a child with a scaly patch and hair loss.
