Saline drip for dehydration: what to know

Normal saline is a sterile fluid delivered through a small tube placed in a vein. It can support circulation while clinicians look for the reason fluid was lost, such as vomiting, diarrhoea, heat exhaustion or another illness. The team checks symptoms, vital signs and medical history, then decides whether intravenous fluid is appropriate. Mild dehydration may improve with frequent small sips of a suitable oral rehydration drink.

Tell the clinician about kidney, heart or liver problems, pregnancy, medicines and how much you have been able to drink or urinate. During the drip, the insertion site may feel cool or briefly sore. Staff monitor your response and may stop or adjust treatment if swelling, pain or breathlessness develops. Continue small sips if advised, and follow the plan for treating the underlying illness.

Seek prompt care for confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, marked weakness or worsening drowsiness. Urgent review is also needed after severe heat exposure or ongoing fluid loss. Dark urine can occur with dehydration, but persistent urinary changes or pain need assessment for other causes.

Ask what caused the dehydration, why intravenous fluid is recommended, how much you should drink afterwards and which symptoms should bring you back. Mention kidney or heart conditions before treatment starts.
