What should you know about RSV shortness of breath?

RSV can swell the lining of the airways and increase mucus. Smaller airways may become narrowed, so breathing can sound wheezy or require more effort. The person may breathe faster, pause during feeds, or tire while speaking or crying. Breathlessness has many possible causes, including [Asthma](/conditions/asthma/), [Acute Bronchitis](/conditions/acute-bronchitis/), or [COPD](/conditions/copd/), so the symptom does not identify RSV by itself.

Sit the person upright and keep them calm. Loosen restrictive clothing and avoid smoke. If they can swallow comfortably, offer small drinks; do not force fluids during severe breathlessness. Use a prescribed reliever only according to the existing plan. Observe colour, alertness, speech or feeding, and the movement of the ribs. Arrange medical assessment promptly if the breathlessness is new, worsening, or interfering with normal activity.

Call emergency services for blue or grey lips, severe chest pulling, gasping, pauses in breathing, inability to speak in normal phrases, collapse, or unusual difficulty waking. Infants need urgent attention if they cannot feed because of breathlessness or become floppy. Do not drive someone who is severely struggling to breathe; seek emergency support and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.

Ask whether the symptoms fit airway narrowing, what breathing signs require immediate help, and whether an inhaler or other treatment is appropriate. Record when breathlessness began and describe changes during sleep, feeding, walking, or speaking.
