What should you know about rotavirus vaccine live attenuated?

Live attenuated means the vaccine contains a virus that has been weakened so it can stimulate immune protection without causing the usual illness in a healthy child. Rotavirus vaccine is given by mouth rather than as an injection. It helps the body recognise rotavirus, which can cause vomiting and watery diarrhoea. Protection is especially useful because dehydration can develop quickly in babies and toddlers.

A child may have mild temporary changes such as irritability or loose stools after vaccination. The vaccine is not suitable for every child; a history of a serious reaction, certain immune problems, or a bowel condition may change the recommendation.

Seek urgent medical help if a child has severe or worsening tummy pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen, blood in the stool, unusual weakness, or very few wet nappies.
