What should you know about rosacea on scalp treatment?

Short answer
Rosacea on the scalp needs an individual assessment because irritation, redness, and bumps can have several causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How scalp symptoms are understood
Rosacea is most often recognised on the central face, but warmth, flushing, sensitivity, burning, or acne-like bumps near the hairline can prompt a closer examination. Scalp scaling, inflamed follicles, contact irritation from hair products, and seborrhoeic dermatitis may look similar. A clinician will ask when symptoms began, inspect the scalp and nearby skin, and review products, medicines, heat exposure, and previous treatments. The diagnosis is not made from a scalp bump alone.
Treatment and daily care
Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and rinse thoroughly; avoid scrubbing, picking, very hot water, and products that sting. Keep a brief record of flares and possible triggers such as heat, sun, spicy food, alcohol, or a new shampoo. Depending on the findings, a dermatologist may consider prescription anti-inflammatory treatment, treatment for follicle inflammation, or azelaic acid therapy. Light or laser procedures such as IPL Photofacial or Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment are generally considered for visible facial redness rather than used as a self-directed scalp remedy.
When to arrange medical care
Arrange a dermatology review if scalp redness, burning, tenderness, pustules, or persistent itch does not settle after removing a suspected irritant. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, drainage, severe pain, or new eye symptoms. These features can point to infection or another condition needing a different treatment.
Questions for your dermatologist
Ask whether the scalp findings fit rosacea, folliculitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, or product irritation; which cleanser and leave-on products are suitable; whether a prescription should be applied to the scalp or hairline; and which warning signs should lead you to return sooner.
