Rosacea near the eye: what to know

The skin around the eyes may look red or swollen and feel burning, itchy or unusually sensitive. The eyes themselves may feel dry, gritty or watery, and the eyelid edges can become irritated or crusty. Facial rosacea and eye symptoms can occur together, but eyelid eczema, allergy, infection and other eye conditions can look similar. Do not apply a facial treatment close to the eye unless a clinician has confirmed that it is suitable.

Avoid rubbing the eyes, fragranced products and makeup during an active flare. Cleanse the face gently and keep products away from the lash line unless directed otherwise. Cool compresses may feel soothing, but stop anything that increases pain or redness. A dermatologist can coordinate with an eye clinician; options for facial redness, including IPL Photofacial or Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment, are not substitutes for assessment of the eye itself.

Seek prompt eye care for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, marked one-sided redness, or a persistent foreign-body sensation. Arrange a dermatology review for recurring eyelid rash, swelling, crusting or facial flares. Breathing difficulty with facial swelling is an emergency.
