What should you know about rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis?

Rosacea commonly causes central facial flushing, persistent redness, warmth, sensitivity, and sometimes acne-like bumps. Seborrheic dermatitis is associated with flaky or scaly patches in oilier areas, including the scalp, hairline, eyebrows, sides of the nose, and behind the ears. It may also cause itch. Dandruff is a scalp form of this pattern. Having facial redness does not by itself establish rosacea, and having flakes does not by itself establish seborrheic dermatitis; examination helps separate these from contact irritation, acne, psoriasis, or infection.

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturiser, and avoid scrubbing or picking scale. Note triggers such as heat, alcohol, spicy food, stress, fragranced products, or harsh hair products. A clinician may discuss medicated shampoo for scalp disease or topical antifungal treatment for affected skin when seborrheic dermatitis fits. Rosacea care may need a different plan, so avoid borrowing steroid or antifungal products without advice.

Arrange a dermatology assessment when redness, scale, itch, or burning keeps returning, spreads, or interferes with sleep or daily care. Seek prompt medical attention for rapidly worsening swelling, significant pain, pus, fever, or eye pain or vision change. A clinician can check whether one condition or more than one is present.
