Right-sided heart failure causes

The right ventricle pumps blood towards the lungs. Lung disease or high pressure in the lung arteries can make this chamber work harder. Heart failure that begins on the left can also raise pressure backwards and eventually strain the right side. Valve disease, a weakened heart muscle, an irregular rhythm such as atrial fibrillation, or longstanding hypertension may contribute. Fluid can then collect in the legs, ankles or abdomen because blood is not moving forward efficiently.

A cause is not always obvious from symptoms alone. Assessment may include an examination, blood tests, an electrocardiogram and heart imaging. A clinician may also look for clot-related lung problems or other conditions affecting circulation.

Arrange a medical review if swelling, breathlessness, reduced stamina or a racing heartbeat is new, persistent or worsening. Record when symptoms began, whether they change with activity, and any recent weight or medication changes. Take prescribed medicines as directed and avoid changing fluid or salt intake without advice. A chronic disease review can help check blood pressure, rhythm, kidney function and treatment response.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion, blue lips, or rapidly worsening swelling. Sudden symptoms after a long journey, surgery or prolonged immobility also need urgent assessment because a clot can strain the heart and lungs.

Ask which condition is placing strain on the right side, what tests are needed, which symptoms should prompt urgent help, and how your medicines affect fluid balance or heart rhythm.
