How to get rid of whiteheads

A whitehead is a closed comedone: oil and shed skin cells collect inside a pore, while the surface stays covered. They often appear as small, flesh-coloured or pale bumps on the forehead, nose, cheeks, or chin. Whiteheads can occur with acne, but similar-looking bumps such as milia have a different cause and may need different care.

Wash gently and avoid scrubs, picking, and squeezing, which can irritate the pore and leave marks. Choose products labelled non-comedogenic, remove makeup before bed, and introduce one active treatment at a time. A clinician may recommend topical retinoids to help prevent blocked pores. Professional extraction can be considered when bumps persist, but it should be performed with clean technique by a trained provider.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the bumps are widespread, painful, inflamed, leaving dark marks, or not improving with consistent gentle care. Seek advice sooner if a new bump is hard, rapidly changing, bleeding, or unlike your usual whiteheads; a clinician can check whether it is acne, milia, or another skin condition.
