Rheumatoid arthritis and IV treatment

An IV medicine is delivered through a cannula during an appointment rather than taken as a tablet or injection at home. It may be considered when RA remains active, when another treatment has not suited you, or when the treatment plan calls for supervised delivery. The medicine selected depends on your symptoms, examination, previous treatments, other conditions, and infection risk.

Before an infusion, the team may review your health, medicines, vaccinations, and recent infections. Tell them about fever, cough, dental infection, skin infection, or antibiotic treatment before attending.

Ask how long the visit may take, what monitoring is required, and whether you should continue usual medicines. Bring an up-to-date medicine list and report any previous reaction to an infusion. During treatment, promptly mention itching, rash, chest tightness, dizziness, or breathing difficulty. Keep follow-up appointments so symptoms, examination findings, and safety checks can guide the next dose.

Contact your treatment team promptly after an infusion if you develop fever, chills, worsening cough, painful urination, or a spreading skin problem. Get urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, faintness, or severe chest symptoms. Do not wait for the next appointment if a reaction feels sudden or serious.
