What should you know about rhabdo myalgia?

Muscle aches may accompany Influenza, COVID-19, Long COVID, Brucellosis, Dengue Fever, or Malaria, particularly when fever, fatigue, or other illness symptoms are present. Widespread or persistent pain can occur with Fibromyalgia, while Hypothyroidism can contribute to aches alongside tiredness, cold intolerance, dry skin, or constipation. Recent exercise, an injury, prolonged immobility, or a new medicine may provide another clue. Muscle pain alone does not identify one condition.

Reduce strenuous activity, use gentle movement as tolerated, sleep regularly, and drink fluids. Note where the pain is, whether it is symmetrical, what started it, and whether weakness, swelling, fever, numbness, or a rash is present. Do not push through severe pain. Discuss persistent aches or symptoms that limit daily activity with a clinician, and mention supplements, prescribed medicines, recent travel, insect bites, and any recent infection.

Seek urgent help for sudden marked weakness, inability to move a limb, severe swelling, chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, or severe pain after intense exertion or an injury. Prompt assessment is also needed for muscle aches with high fever, a stiff neck, a spreading rash, very little urine, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These features may signal a problem needing examination and blood or urine tests.

Ask whether your symptoms fit an infection, medication effect, thyroid problem, inflammatory condition, or exertional injury; whether blood tests are appropriate; and which activities and pain medicines are safe while you recover. Give a full timeline rather than only naming the painful area.
