Can spirometry results improve?

During spirometry, you breathe into a Spirometer through a mouthpiece. The test records the amount of air exhaled and the speed of exhalation. A clinician may repeat the measurements after an inhaled medicine to see whether airflow changes.

Results can be affected by effort, an active chest infection, smoking, or difficulty forming a seal around the mouthpiece. Spirometry may support assessment of Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis, or Chronic Cough, but it does not by itself explain every breathing problem.

Follow the testing service's instructions about inhalers, smoking, meals, and exercise. Wear comfortable clothing and tell the clinician about recent illness, chest pain, dizziness, or breathing treatment. During the test, follow coaching and give each attempt your best safe effort.

If smoking is part of your routine, a Smoking Cessation Programme can reduce ongoing airway irritation. Inhaler Therapy may be adjusted when the results and symptoms point to a treatable airflow problem; do not change an inhaler without advice.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue lips, chest pain, fainting, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. Contact your clinician if breathing worsens after the test, wheezing persists, or a cough brings up blood.

Ask what the measurements mean in your case, whether the test should be repeated when you are well, whether medicine was used before or after testing, and which symptoms should prompt urgent help. Ask how your inhaler technique affects treatment.
