Retro-auricular cellulitis: what to know

Cellulitis behind the ear can enter through a small cut, scratch, insect bite, skin condition, or irritated area that was difficult to notice. A clinician checks how far redness and swelling extend and looks for a deeper ear or scalp problem. Athlete's foot can create breaks in skin elsewhere and may contribute to recurring bacterial infections.

People with diabetes may need especially careful assessment because healing and infection control can be affected. The infection may worsen or spread into the bloodstream if treatment is delayed.

Arrange prompt medical review rather than squeezing, cutting, or massaging the area. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed, keep the skin clean and dry, and mark the outer edge of redness if a clinician suggests it so progression is easier to judge. Mention diabetes, immune problems, recent ear symptoms, and any medication allergies.

Seek urgent care if redness spreads quickly, pain becomes severe, swelling pushes the ear outward, fever develops, or you feel faint, confused, unusually drowsy, or short of breath. These changes can signal a deeper infection or sepsis. Worsening symptoms despite treatment also need same-day reassessment.

Ask whether the infection involves the ear or scalp, which symptoms should improve first, how to care for the skin, whether a culture or scan is needed, and when you should return if the redness does not settle.
