Short answer

Restless legs on a plane can be aggravated by prolonged sitting, so movement planning and attention to warning signs are useful.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Travel trigger
Prolonged sitting can bring out or intensify the urge to move.
On-board response
Move the ankles, stretch gently and walk when permitted and safe.

Restless legs versus other flight-related problems

Restless legs causes an urge to move with crawling, pulling, aching or tingling sensations during rest; walking or stretching may ease it briefly. A flight can make this pattern more noticeable because space is limited and sitting continues. Restless Legs Syndrome, iron deficiency, kidney disease, nerve problems and some medicines can contribute. However, one-sided swelling, warmth or pain is a different warning pattern and should not be dismissed as restless legs.

Prepare for the journey

If safe and permitted, choose an aisle seat, keep comfortable footwear on, and move your ankles and knees regularly. Walk when the crew allows it, stretch gently at your seat, and avoid excess caffeine or alcohol if they trigger symptoms. Carry prescribed medicines in your hand luggage and do not take extra sedatives or iron without clinical advice. Hydration and a normal sleep routine may also help.

Warning signs during or after travel

Tell cabin crew promptly if you develop sudden chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, coughing blood, or severe one-sided leg swelling, warmth or pain. Arrange medical care after landing for persistent or worsening one-sided symptoms. For recurring restless sensations without these warning signs, arrange a routine review, especially if sleep or travel is regularly affected.

Could my symptoms reflect Restless Legs Syndrome or low iron? Do I need a medication review before travel? What movement plan is suitable for my health and the length of my journey?
