What should you know about replacing Nexplanon?

Nexplanon is a small etonogestrel implant placed under the skin of the upper arm. During a replacement visit, a clinician checks the implant and your health history, numbs the area, removes the existing rod through a small opening, and places the new rod in the arm. The appointment is also a chance to review bleeding changes, medicines, pregnancy plans, and any concerns about the method.

Arrange the appointment before the current implant reaches the end of its recommended use. The correct timing depends on the specific product guidance, when it was inserted, and your clinician's assessment. If replacement is delayed, ask whether you need another contraceptive method while you wait.

Tell the clinic about allergies, regular medicines, bleeding problems, and any chance of pregnancy. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the upper arm, and follow the clinic's instructions about keeping the dressing clean and dry. Mild soreness, bruising, or swelling near the insertion site can occur after the procedure. Avoid pressing on the area and follow the advice you receive about strenuous arm activity.

Check that you can feel the new rod where the clinician placed it, but do not repeatedly manipulate the site. Keep any follow-up instructions and contact details available. If you choose not to continue with Nexplanon, discuss alternatives such as the hormonal coil, which is another reversible contraceptive option.

Contact the clinic promptly if the wound becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, or painful, if discharge develops, or if you develop a fever. Seek urgent medical help for severe arm pain, marked swelling, new weakness or numbness, heavy bleeding, or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as trouble breathing or swelling of the face.

If you cannot feel the implant, it appears to have moved, or the dressing opens and the wound separates, ask the inserting clinic for advice rather than trying to remove or reposition it yourself.
