Removing staple stitches

Skin staples hold wound edges together while new tissue strengthens the area. At review, the clinician looks for separation, fluid, increasing redness, and other signs that healing is incomplete. A sterile staple remover is placed under each staple, which bends it so it can slide out. You may feel brief pressure or a pinch as each one is taken out; tell the clinician if the area is very tender.

Staples are not the same as absorbable stitches, which are designed to break down or remain beneath the skin. The removal plan depends on the wound site, depth, tension, and healing appearance rather than the calendar alone.

Keep the appointment even if the wound looks tidy, because the clinician must assess its strength. Follow the dressing instructions and keep hands clean before touching the area. After removal, the wound may need adhesive strips or a light dressing to support the edges. Keep the area protected from rubbing and follow advice about washing, bathing, exercise, and lifting.

Do not remove a staple with household tools. If a staple loosens, catches on clothing, or seems buried, cover it lightly and contact the service that placed it.
