Remedies for Perioral Dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis causes small red or skin-coloured bumps, dryness, burning, or tightness around the mouth. It can also affect the nose or eyes. The skin immediately next to the lips may be relatively clear, which helps distinguish it from some forms of irritation. Pimples and sensitive skin can look similar, so an examination is useful.

Heavy creams, fragranced products, cosmetics, and topical corticosteroids may aggravate the eruption in some people. Do not stop a prescribed steroid abruptly without advice if it has been used extensively; ask the prescriber how to change it safely.

Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Pause scrubs, exfoliating acids, facial oils, and strongly fragranced products. Choose a simple moisturiser only if needed for tightness, and introduce products one at a time after the skin settles.

A clinician may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy or another anti-inflammatory approach. Oral antibiotics for acne are sometimes used for their anti-inflammatory effect, but they are not suitable for everyone and should not be started from leftover medication. Improvement can be gradual, and continued trigger exposure can prolong the eruption.

Arrange a review when bumps persist, spread toward the eyes, recur after stopping treatment, or interfere with eating, sleep, or daily comfort. Seek prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, vision change, marked swelling, pus, or rapidly worsening redness because another problem may need urgent treatment.

Ask whether the rash is perioral dermatitis or another condition, which products to pause, and how to taper any corticosteroid safely. Discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, eye symptoms, and the expected treatment timeline before starting an antibiotic or other prescription.
