How to relieve restless legs

Short answer
To relieve restless legs, keep a regular sleep pattern, stretch or walk when symptoms start, review triggers, and ask about underlying causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How restless legs may present
Restless legs commonly causes an urge to move, unpleasant crawling or pulling sensations, and symptoms that become stronger during rest or in the evening. Movement may ease them temporarily. Recurrent symptoms can occur with restless legs syndrome, and may also be associated with iron deficiency anaemia, chronic kidney disease, or peripheral neuropathy. The presence of restless legs does not by itself identify which condition, if any, is responsible.
Measures that may ease symptoms
Keep bedtime and wake time consistent, and use gentle calf or thigh stretches, a warm shower, massage, or a short walk when discomfort begins. Moderate daytime activity may help, while strenuous exercise close to bedtime can aggravate symptoms for some people. Review caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and medicines with a clinician rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself. Blood tests may be useful before taking iron; iron supplementation should follow medical advice.
When to arrange care
Book an appointment if symptoms repeatedly disturb sleep, affect concentration, are worsening, or began after a new medicine. Seek prompt care for new one-sided leg swelling, redness, warmth, severe pain, weakness, or breathlessness, because these features need assessment rather than home treatment. Mention pregnancy, kidney problems, numbness, and any bleeding to the clinician.
Questions for your doctor
Could iron levels or another condition be contributing? Should I have blood tests? Could any of my medicines worsen symptoms? Which treatment is appropriate if sleep is being disrupted?
