What should you know about relationship fatigue?

Short answer
Relationship fatigue may reflect emotional strain, poor sleep, or a health problem, so persistent tiredness deserves a practical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What fatigue can mean
Fatigue is more than feeling sleepy after a busy day. It can feel like low energy, reduced concentration, irritability, or needing unusual effort for ordinary tasks. Relationship conflict, caring responsibilities, loneliness, and prolonged stress can drain energy, but fatigue can also occur with anaemia, burnout, dehydration, COVID-19, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, or chronic fatigue syndrome. Alcohol use disorder may also disturb sleep and mood. The symptom does not identify one cause by itself.
Notice whether tiredness began after an illness or a change in sleep, work, medicines, alcohol use, appetite, or mood. A simple diary can record sleep, energy, stress, meals, and activities without turning self-monitoring into another burden.
Useful next steps
Start with regular sleep and wake times, adequate fluids, balanced meals, and gentle movement that does not leave you worse. Break demanding conversations into shorter periods and choose a calm time to speak about practical pressures. If alcohol is being used to cope or sleep, mention this honestly to a clinician; support is available.
Arrange a primary-care review if fatigue continues, interferes with work or relationships, or has no clear explanation. The clinician may ask about sleep, mood, diet, bleeding, infection, medicines, and other symptoms, then decide whether an examination or blood tests are appropriate.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for fatigue with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, one-sided weakness, or thoughts of harming yourself. Book a prompt appointment for unexplained weight change, persistent fever, bleeding, marked thirst or urination changes, or fatigue that is steadily worsening. A partner’s concern can be useful, but it should not replace your own assessment.
Questions for your doctor
What causes should we consider based on my sleep, mood, medicines, diet, and other symptoms? Could I need tests for anaemia or another medical condition? What level of activity is appropriate while I am tired? Which changes should prompt an earlier review?
