What should you know about a reinjured stress fracture?

Short answer

A reinjured stress fracture needs renewed protection from impact and clinical reassessment to check healing before activity is increased again.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why reinjury matters

A stress fracture is a bone injury caused by repeated loading that exceeds the bone’s ability to recover. Returning pain after a period of improvement can mean the bone has been loaded too quickly, although other problems can also cause pain. A reinjury may occur after running, jumping, a fall, or a rapid increase in walking activity.

Pain can occur in the shin, foot, heel, or thigh, and limping is a sign that normal loading is not being tolerated. Bone healing cannot be judged reliably by comfort during one short activity, so a clinician may review your history, examine the area, and decide whether imaging or further protection is needed.

What to do now

Stop running, jumping, and other impact activity until you have been advised how much loading is safe. Do not try to test the area repeatedly. Use prescribed footwear, a boot, or crutches as directed, and keep any follow-up appointment. Record where the pain occurs, what triggered it, and whether it appears at rest or during ordinary walking.

Read about [Stress Fracture](/conditions/stress-fracture/) and related symptoms such as [Foot Pain](/symptoms/foot-pain/), [Heel Pain](/symptoms/heel-pain/), [Shin Pain](/symptoms/shin-pain/), or [Thigh Pain](/symptoms/thigh-pain/). Your clinician may also consider bone-health factors, including [Vitamin D Deficiency](/conditions/vitamin-d-deficiency/) and whether [Vitamin D Supplementation](/treatments/medical-management/vitamin-d-supplementation/) is appropriate.

When to seek urgent care

Arrange prompt review for returning focal bone pain, pain at rest or at night, new swelling, or [Limping](/symptoms/limping/). Seek urgent care after a sudden severe increase in pain, a fall with inability to bear weight, visible deformity, numbness, or a cold or pale foot. Do not resume impact exercise solely because swelling is limited.

Questions for your clinician

Could this be a reinjury or another source of pain? What level of weight-bearing is safe now? Do I need repeat imaging or a different support? Which strength and impact checks should I complete before returning to activity? Should my bone health or vitamin levels be assessed?

Questions people ask

Can I keep exercising with a suspected reinjured stress fracture?

Avoid impact exercise until a clinician has advised a safe level of loading; repeated testing can worsen bone stress.

Does less pain prove that a stress fracture has healed?

No. Healing and readiness for impact require clinical guidance and a gradual loading plan, not symptoms alone.
