What should you know about regular birth after c section?

After a caesarean, labour can be planned with the aim of giving birth through the vagina. Your clinician will review the reason for the earlier caesarean, the type of uterine incision, any other uterine surgery, your health and the position of the baby. The team also considers whether emergency caesarean care and continuous fetal monitoring are available if labour changes.

The main concern discussed during labour is scar separation or rupture, which can cause sudden abdominal pain, changes in the baby’s heart rate or heavy bleeding. These signs need immediate assessment. A planned repeat Caesarean Section may be advised when the risks of labour are judged higher for you or the baby.

Ask for a review of your previous birth records early in pregnancy. Discuss where you will give birth, how monitoring will work, what happens if labour does not begin naturally, and how pain relief will be provided. Contact your maternity unit urgently for vaginal bleeding, severe or constant abdominal pain, faintness, reduced baby movements, or fluid leaking from the vagina. Headache, visual changes or sudden swelling also need prompt assessment because they can occur with Pre-eclampsia.
